Bruce Petty is a distinguished Pacific War historian with a passion for sharing insights gleaned from his extensive research and personal experiences. Born in Long Beach, California, in 1945, Bruce’s journey into the world of history and storytelling began early in life.
After enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserves and serving aboard the USS Yorktown during the Vietnam War, Bruce pursued his academic interests, graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a degree in history in 1972. His thirst for knowledge and adventure led him to Saipan in the Mariana Islands in 1995, where he delved deep into the rich history of the Pacific War.
Expertise and Accomplishments
Bruce’s dedication to preserving the stories of the Pacific War led to the publication of four books, including his latest work, “New Zealand in the Pacific War: Personal Accounts of World War II.” His contributions extend beyond the written word, with numerous articles published in esteemed magazines such as Inside History, WWII History Magazine, and The Naval History Magazine.
A seasoned lecturer, Bruce has shared his wealth of knowledge with diverse audiences, including high school students, veterans’ groups, and historical societies. His expertise has also taken him to prestigious platforms like the US Naval Academy’s McMullen Symposium, where he has spoken twice.
